A plasma treatment will start in South Korea. This is an experimental treatment for Mers (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome). This disease killed 19 people in this country. The plasma treatment is useful against some deadly diseases, like Ebola. It uses the blood of patients who have successfully fought Mers infection. Now, there are 150 people infected with Mers in South Korea.
Germany also reported the first case of this disease. According to the media reports, a 65 year old man, died in the city of Osnabruck. This city is in the northwestern part of Germany.
The health ministry, from South Korea, said that two hospitals will start an experiment plasma treatment. The first patient, was a 68 year old man, who travelled to the Middle East. He was infected last month. On Tuesday, 3 deaths were reported and 4 new cases. Officials are claiming that the number of new cases is reduced, but there is a lot of misinformation. However, many schools are re-opened this week. Teachers are spraying salt on the school grounds in order to protect themselves and children. Health workers are spraying disinfectant in the karaoke rooms and other business places. People are concerned because there is no cure or vaccine for Mers.
The Mers is caused by the same coronavirus that caused Sars (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) outbreak in China, in 2003. Same as Sars, Mers is spread by sneezes and coughs. Experts still don’t know how this virus is actually transmitted. Doctors believe that an experiment plasma treatment can save lives. 36% of patients infected with Mers die.
